Ancestors: Civil War Veterans
Of my eight great-grandfathers, I have identified Civil War activity for four. I believe that this was probably all. Charles Woolfolk Jones and James Craddock Robertson would've been 40-50 years old, while John Cramer and Michael Bastian lived in Union Territory. The rest served in the Army of Northern Virginia.
Hammond Fletcher Crump, Co.F, 3rd Virginia Cavalry Regiment
Had a depression in his forehead from a slow-moving musket ball
Wounded at Hawe's Shop in 1864, requiring removal of one leg
Many other Crumps in Co.F, probably cousins
Burwell Nicholas Holt, Co. I, 56th Virginia Infantry Regiment
Served in the same unit with most of his brothers. Letters home from John Lee Holt have been published in "I Wrote You Word: Poignant Letters of Pvt. Holt"
Richard Alfred Allen, Co.C, 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment
Conscripted in fall of 1864
Absent during the winter of 1864-1865
Paroled from Union custody at Burkeville, April 1865
not known to serve with other relatives. Unit was based in Nottoway County
William Harold Cole, Co.D, 30th Virginia Infanty Regiment
Served a one-month hitch near the beginning of the war, and possibly one more later on.
Brother Mordecai Warner Cole was in the same unit
